Everything You Need to Know About Socket Screws

Fasteners are going to be a part of just about every kind of project you can think of. Even those cheap pieces of furniture you can have delivered to your door have fasteners that help make them more stable even if the materials are kind of shoddy.

Having fasteners like these make any project easier. Before you dive into those how-to guides, make sure that you have the right fasteners to get the job done. Let’s focus on socket screws and how they can make your next job a lot easier.

Understanding Socket Screws

The best place to start is by answering the question, “what is a socket screw?” Socket screws have been manufactured using a hexagonal drive that is built right into the head. You need either a hex key or Allen wrench to tighten these whereas many screws require either a flathead or Phillips head screwdriver.

Socket screws often have squared-off tips. You might hear them called flat point socket screws and they are used in a ton of different applications, including some DIY projects. They are very similar to most of the other screws you’ll find but has some of the superior performance features that you would find in hex fasteners like nuts and bolts.

Different Sizes

Like any other screw, you will find socket screws in a wide range of sizes as well. The length that you see on a hex screw is generally measured starting right under the head and going all the way to the tip. This is a general rule for other screw types, too, but make sure you check the overall length so that you can factor in the head where needed.

For the most part, socket screws are going to come in either imperial or metric for things like diameter and length. Really, it all comes down to the supplier or manufacturer you are considering. The best manufacturers have a sizing chart that comes with it so you can compare and contrast sizes to find the right fit.

The smaller sizes, running from M2 to M6 with lengths between 3mm and 20mm, are usually in greater demand. That said, there are heavier gauges and extra-long screws that you can find to accommodate whatever it is you are working on.

Why Socket Screws are Beneficial

Socket screws are used for particular jobs because they offer certain benefits. We’ll get into each of those below so you get a better idea of why you would want to implement socket screws into your next project.

Better torque force. Compared to your standard screws, socket screws have a much higher clamping and torque force than the rest. For applications that require more force, other screws may not work. That equates to greater stability across the work surface and less room for something to go wrong.

Save money. Because socket screws provide more force and torque power, you probably won’t need nearly as many to get the job done. Naturally, the fewer fasteners you have to buy, the less money you spend. At a professional level, it is possible to save hundreds, if not thousands, by purchasing fewer socket screws.

Less damage to the material. Another benefit to that torque strength and not having to use so many socket screws has to do with the material you are screwing into. Whenever you implement a screw, it is doing inherent damage to the surface of that material. With fewer holes to account for, you do less damage to the material, allowing it to look better and keep its structural integrity.
