Swim Bladder Disease in Betta Fish: Best Cure

We all know that the word “Betta” is short for Betta splendens, or Siamese Fighting Fish. These can be found in pet stores around the world and are usually kept in small bowls with little to no filtration. While Bettas are not known for being long-lived fish, they can live up to 5 years if given proper care. Unfortunately, many Bettas suffer from a condition called Swim Bladder Disease (SBD), which is very common among these fish.

The disease manifests itself by making it difficult for the Betta to swim upright and often leads to death within weeks of diagnosis. Let’s talk about 3 best cure processes.

What Is The Swim Bladder?

The swim bladder is a gas-filled organ found in many fish species which allows them to control their buoyancy. In animals with lungs, air fills up the alveoli and makes it easier for them to float or sink as needed. In fish that lack lungs, this role falls on the swim bladder instead.

When filled with air, these organs allow fish to rise towards the water’s surface where they breathe more easily through gills which also aids in floating along currents without expending too much energy. Alternatively, by releasing excess air from the bladder into other tissues such as muscle tissue and fat deposits throughout its body; a fish can make itself denser than surrounding waters allowing them to dive down lower towards the bottom of lakes or oceans during feeding. But if you are looking for a healthy betta fish, you can buy betta fish online.

Swim Bladder Disease Treatment Process

The treatment process includes the following steps viz. removing bowl, adding stress coat, feeding peas and adding air pump etc.

Removing Bowl

Bettas are really not meant to live in small bowls because it does not allow them enough room to swim properly. They need at least a gallon of water with an efficient filtration system that can keep ammonia levels down as well as very warm temperature around 78-82 degrees Fahrenheit or higher depending on your geographical location.

Adding Stress Coat

Fish produce hormones called cortisol when they are stressed out which can be harmful for their immune system if produced over relatively short periods of time. However, if fish gets exposed to high amounts of stress hormone for long durations of time, they can become immune to its effects and will not be able to fight off diseases.

In order to prevent the production of cortisol hormones in fish, you should add a stress coat into their water which is a chemical that helps remove any dissolved chemicals from the body such as heavy metals or medications given previously for treating other issues.

Feeding Peas

A good way of preventing swim bladder disease is by feeding your betta peas instead of pellets or bloodworms . This works because eating high protein food like those mentioned above decreases the amount of ammonia produced during digestion where excess nitrogen gets converted into ammonia after being processed through kidneys first before being expelled out from gills making it difficult for them to breathe properly under high levels of toxicity. If this occurs over long periods of time, it can lead to death.

Adding Air Pump

Another way you can prevent SBD is by adding an air pump into your Betta’s bowl which helps keep the water well oxygenated making sure that fish gets enough supply of fresh oxygen for respiration throughout the day.

Conclusion

The swim bladder is a small organ that helps the fish maintain buoyancy. When it becomes inflamed or infected, it can cause problems with balance and swimming which are very serious for these finned pets. If your pet has been exhibiting any of these symptoms, you may want to take them in for an exam by their vet as soon as possible.
